Ayr United Football Club are a Scottish association football team based in Ayr that plays in the Ladbrokes Championship which is the Second Tier of the Scottish Professional Football League. Formed in 1910 after the merger of former clubs Ayr Parkhouse FC and Ayr FC (the latter being a prior merger of Ayr Thistle FC and Ayr Academicals FC in 1879) and have played at Somerset Park since the clubs inception, their nickname is "The Honest Men", taken from a line in the poem "Tam o' Shanter" by Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns ('Auld Ayr, wham ne'er a Toon surpasses for Honest Men and Bonnie Lassies'). Most widely regarded as the clubs most successful manager was the great Ally MacLeod.
The club have spent 34 seasons in Scotland's First Tier, the last being 1977–78, and have been the champions of the Second Tier on six occasions, of the Third Tier three times and have never played in the Fourth Tier or below.
