Nottingham Forest Football Club are a football club from the city of Nottingham in England. Founded in 1864, Forest are one of the oldest clubs in England but their most successful period did not come until Brian Clough took over 1975 and later lead them to two European Cups, one league title and four League Cups.
Ayr United had landed a semi-final Anglo Scottish Cup tie against Brian Clough's Nottingham Forest after a controversial win over Newcastle United in the quarter final.
Forest were always to strong for Ayr although only won the first leg at the by 2-1 with Johnny Graham being Ayr’s scorer. That was the only goal of the tie for United as Forest won 2-0 at Ayr on 3rd November 1976.
